Rotary Youth Speaks Public Speaking competition - national final!

A journey which began all the way back in January finally came to an end on Sunday for Jamie, Sophia and Laurel.

The trio travelled to Hull to represent d'Overbroeck's in the national final of the Rotary Youth Speaks Public Speaking competition. They faced stiff competition from seven other schools from across the country and have much to celebrate, though sadly were pipped to the post on the night by the High School of Glasgow.

Well done to Jamie, Sophia and Laurel for all their hard work over the past few months. Congratulations also to all those who took part in the earlier rounds of the competition. Ruth Robinson, our Head of English, has already begun preparing for 2014!

Jack Turner's Live Below the Line challenge!

Jack Turner of Year 8 will this week be taking part in the Live Below the Line challenge, an innovative awareness and fundraising campaign that's making a huge difference in the fight against extreme poverty.

The campaign is challenging people to eat for just £1 per day for five days, aiming to bring to life the hunger, boredom and logistical challenges that the 1.4 billion people currently living in extreme poverty experience each day.

Jack's Mum, Dad and younger brother and sister are also taking part in the challenge - so this family of five will need to be fed for just £25 this week. Breakfast today was some wheat biscuits while lunch will consist of an apple, a carrot and two Nutella sandwiches. Dinner throughout the week will be plain rice or spaghetti. Pretty tough going for a 13 year old boy!

Jack has already exceeded his original fundraising target but can still support him! Please visit www.livebelowtheline.com/me/jackturner

Live Below the Line participants can choose which charity will benefit from the money raised by sponsorship. The family have decided to raise money for Opportunity International - find out more at www.opportunity.org.uk

Storming into the final!

Basketball U19 County Cup Semi-Final

A fantastic team display by d’Overbroeck’s saw them beat Bartholomew 52-40 in a well contested semi-final play-off. Excellent team defence saw d’Overbroeck’s edge a close, but low scoring first period 10-6. In the second period d’Overbroeck’s started to find their range with some superb shooting and driving from the outstanding Fong Wu. This was aided by a much improved offensive performance by Duncan Churcher who converted several rebounds, whilst the introduction of Tianhan Tan lead to some important points from open play and the free throw line. At half time the score was 20-10 to d’Overbroeck’s.

In the second half Bartholomew came out hard playing a full court press, putting the defence under a lot of pressure. Thankfully Vlad Baranchikov and Marko Stupar were coming up with the big defensive rebounds and in an even quarter the lead was kept to 10 points. Bartholomew were desperate for possession in the last quarter and that led to them giving away lots of fouls. Eventually d’Overbroeck’s were able to seal the game from the free throw line and never looked like losing their lead.

KICK-111

The team consisted of players form all three parts of the college, including a debut for year 10 student Kwame Sellick.

Congratulations to the team on making our first final: Marko Stupar (Captain), Duncan Churcher, Juan Churcher, Toby Sun, Tom New, Vladimir Baranchikov, Fon Wu, Tianhan Tan, Edison Fai and Kwame Sellick.

Player of the match: Fong Wu, who scored 32 of our points.

Look out Hull - here comes d'Overbroeck's!

This Sunday our intrepid trio of public speakers will travel to Hull for the national final of the Rotary Youth Speaks Public Speaking Competition.

Jamie, Sophia and Laurel, pictured above at the district final, will once again represent d'Overbroeck's College, this time facing competition from seven other schools from across the country.

Reaching the final of such a high-profile national competition is clearly a huge achievement and we wish them all the very best of luck!

Year 9 trip to the Globe Theatre

At the end of the Spring Term Year Nine went to The Globe Theatre in London to see a production of Romeo and Juliet

It was fast-paced, in modern dress and aimed at appealing to a young audience. Most of the actors were young and there was plenty of music, dance and audience interaction. We were fortunate to secure seats (most of the audience had to stand) and despite the wind-chill factor, it was a great experience.

The students enjoyed the afternoon, and having studied the play were able to comment thoughtfully on various aspects of the production. I would also like to congratulate them on their impeccable behaviour; it was a pleasure to take them.
