Year 10 experience life in the world of work!

Our Year 10 students have spent this week away from school, taking part in a wide array of work experience activities across Oxfordshire and beyond!

Here are some of the highlights of those working locally:

Helen has spent the week working at Oxford University Museum of Natural History, dividing her time between the Education service and helping the museum's team of geologists label a series of ancient sponge samples!

James has enjoyed his time at Jack FM on Woodstock Road - if you've been listening closely this week you may even have heard his dulcet tones in an on-air trailer!

Morgan's five days at Oxford Magistrates Court have also gone very well. She spent the first part of the week learning about the day-to-day runnings of a busy magistrates court and was even able to sit in on a trial on Thursday and Friday and, plus visit Oxford Crown Court - at the invitation of a solicitor she met earlier in the week!

Ralph has been in his element at the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford. He's pictured here with part of the museum's collection of shadow puppets, which has formed the basis for his project work throughout the week.

The feedback on all of our Year 10 students from their work experience employers has been hugely positive. We are very grateful to each of these companies and organisations, both large and small, for helping provide our students with such a positive experience this week.

Our Icelandic adventurers need your support!

This July, a group of 27 d’Overbroeck’s College students and staff will embark on the trip of a lifetime into Iceland’s unique landscape.

Their visit will include a sponsored trek into the wilderness of the Landmannalaugar National Park, with funds going to CARE International. They will be scaling the heights of ice mountains with crampons and axes, descending into the depths of volcanic lava tubes, swimming in natural geothermal lakes, driving in snowmobiles across glaciers, passing under waterfalls, whale watching and much more.

If you would like to sponsor the group please visit www.justgiving.com/doverbroecksicelandtrek.

Alternatively you can text ICED 50 followed by the amount (i.e. £10) to 70070.

Jo Kalies runs the London Marathon

d'Overbroeck's PE teacher Jo Kalies recently ran the London Marathon in aid of the Seafarers UK charity... and is now sufficiently recovered to tell us all about it!

Jo completed the course in a time of 6 hours 20 minutes, well within her 7 hour target. Jo says, 'it was an amazing day but very tough! Thank you to all those students and parents who have sponsored and supported me throughout'.

Runners representing Seafarers UK have so far raised an incredible £38,456 - with £1,300 of that coming from sponsorship raised by Jo. It's not too late donate - please visit uk.virginmoneygiving.com/JoKalies

To find out more about Seafarers UK go to www.seafarers-uk.org

The final word from Jo, 'would I do it again next year? I'll have to get back to you on that one!'

Well done, Jo!

Molly Smockum-Owen (and Henry!) compete in NSEA show jumping competition

Year 8's Molly Smockum-Owen competed last weekend in the National Schools Equesterian Association (NSEA) show jumping competiton at Bury Farm, Leighton Buzzard.

In very windy conditions, Molly and her horse Henry went double clear, meaning they picked up no faults in either the first round or the jump-off. However, with 180 competitors in their class competition was strong and Molly and Henry missed out on a place in the top eight.

Molly is one of eight riders on the d’Overbroeck’s College Horse Riding team. This year we have become part of the NSEA and the team have been representing the College in a number of competitions across the county.
